Our Experts Discuss the Broncos, the NFL and the Seahawks

It is that crazy time of year when Vegas throws all of us amateur bettors a bone in the name of wild Super Bowl betting props. So let’s have a little fun making some bets. Winners can take their imaginary winnings and take a well-deserved imaginary vacation…in a cubicle. But, since this post is part of the Super Bowl Challenge, if you gain enough Rep, then you will be enjoying some solid real-world prizes too.

Sports Betting Dime says that while the overall line started at pick 'em and moved to -2.5 Denver, the best bet are the Seahawks at +2. They note the Seahawks might have a poor track record against the Broncos, but they also haven’t played them since 2010 – both are very different teams now. Peyton Manning’s poor cold weather record tilts the line in Seattle’s favor, according to SBD.

What do you think? Is the right play the Seahawks? Do you think the line moving from pick ‘em to the Broncos being 2.5 point favorites is justified?

Take an imaginary $100 and choose some props from below. The rules are 1) You can only make up to four bets total, but one bet must be picking the Broncos (-2.5) or Seahawks (+2.5). 2) You can split how much you wager on each however you like, but do not go over $100. 3) You must EXPLAIN why you are choosing a side in your prop bets. Convince us!

Standard game bets

A: Point spread Seahawks +2.5 (-105) Broncos -2.5 (-115)

B: Will BOTH teams make a field goal from 37 yards or longer Yes (+140) No (-170)

C: Broncos first half points Over 12 (-130) Under 12 (even)

D: Will either team score in the first 6 minutes of the game? Yes (+105) No (-125)

E: Will Russell Wilson throw an interception? Yes (-125) No (-105)

F: Will a touchdown be scored by special teams or defense? Yes (+160) No (-200)

G: Peyton Manning total completions Over 26.5 (-130) Under 26.5 (even)

H: Most Rushing yards Knowshon Moreno +30.5 (-115) Marshawn Lynch -30.5 (-115)

The FUN props!

I: How long will it take Renee Fleming to sing the National Anthem? Over 145.5 (even) Under 145.5 (-140)

J: Will Knowshon Moreno cry during the singing of the National Anthem? Yes (+170) No (-250)

K: Who Will Have More Liverpool goals vs West Brom (-125) Russell Wilson TD passes or tie (-105)

L: Richard Sherman - Will He Receive a Taunting Penalty During the Game? Yes (+400) No (-750)

M: Peyton Manning - How Many Times Will He Say Omaha During the Game? Over 28.5 (-110) Under 28.5 (-130)

N: Will any member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers be shirtless during their performance? Yes (-150) No (+110)

O: Will Michael Crabtree mention Richard Sherman in a tweet during the Super Bowl from kickoff until final whistle? Yes (+300) No (-500)

P: How many times will "Beast Mode" be said during the game? Over 2 (+110) Under 2 (-150)

Q: Will the announcers say the word "Marijuana" during the game? Yes (+550) No (-900)

@Dean Lake first, I'd make a 25$ bet for Seattle. The logic that Sports Betting Dime uses is sound, as history will not be an indicator in this game.

After that, I'd put 50$ on both teams making a field goal over 37 yards. Prater and Steven Hauschka have excellent legs and are capable of making it from almost any distance. Judging by the odds and the profit margin, I'd say both of those moves would be a wise decision on my part.

As for the "fun props"? Very risky, which is why I would only use a total of 25$ for one of those bets.

"Beast mode" will be said much more than 2 times, even if he doesn't break a big run. That's Lynch's nickname, so I'm positive that the announcers will call him that at least 3 times during the course of the game. I'll place the remaining 25$ on that bet and be satisfied.

I was under the impression that, as a Sideline contributor, there would be no math.

But I'm going with $2 on Denver because I think they win by a touchdown at least. Then, $2 on the over for Beast Mode because Joe Buck will love the way his voice sounds when he says it. Then, $1 that no mention of marijuana because they are above that. Then $95 that a Chili Pepper will be shirtless because that is easy money.

@Dana Kurtz, I tend to agree with you on Crabtree, but if Sherman gets beat on a play, I wouldn't be surprised if some sort of dig finds its way into the Twittersphere

Taj Griffin

I don't think Crabtree will talk about the sherminator... Kaepernick might though!

I would make my money in the "Fun props." $50 on Crabtree not saying anything about Sherm, and $50 on Sherm not receiving a taunting penalty. I think Crabtree is above that I guess, and I think Sherm has kinda learnt his lesson. Also, pretty much every guy on the Broncos is very respectable.

$25 on the Seahawks +2.5 (the lines moved to +3, still take em), they not only cover but win out right. Then $25 on Lynch having the most rushing yards...$25 on a Red Hot Chili Pepper being shirtless and $25 on Under 28.5 Omaha's... I dont think he's going to be on the field all that much in this one. #easymoney

@Dana Kurtz, I tend to agree with you on Crabtree, but if Sherman gets beat on a play, I wouldn't be surprised if some sort of dig finds its way into the Twittersphere.

I'm putting 15 on the Seahawks. I don't buy that Manning can't play in cold weather but I do buy that defense wins championships. 25 on Sherman not getting a penalty. He's a smart player and he won't want to hurt his team in the biggest game of his career. 50 on Chili Pepper being shirtless because enough said. and finally 10 on the over of Beast Mode because it can't be explained better than @Keith Anderson. Also, @Dean Lake there's no time for the national anthem over/under.

$50 on the Seahawks. My confidence has dropped quite a bit in this pick as the week has gone by though because I just can't imagine Manning losing. It's kind of like last year when it seemed like destiny that Ray Lewis would go out on top. But, I'll take the better defense and running game every time and a great secondary to continually hold the Broncos to field goals.

$25 on over 26.5 completions for Peyton Manning. I see him throwing at least 40 times as they won't be able to do much on the ground against the Seahawks and I anticipate a lot of short completions.

$25 on Wilson not throwing an interception. The Seahawks will have a game plan for Wilson that will have him throwing a lot of high percentage passes. Plus, Wilson is very good at not turning the ball over and the threat of the run in the play action game should allow Wilson to not have to squeeze a lot of balls through tight windows.

$25 on Denver -2.5. $25 on both teams making a 37-yard FG. I just feel that is the safest bet out of the props. I'd also take Marshawn being the leading rusher. I'd put another $25 because I think that is the next safest. Then I would put my last $25 on Richard Sherman not receiving a taunting penalty, just because if he does after the two weeks that just transpired, then he is much dumber than I thought.

Derek Wizzle

lol at the Crabtree tweet bet prop hahaha. Crabtree probably won't even tweet or watch the game!!

if you were one of Crabtree, wouldn't you tell all your friends and family to bet the farm on yes +300, and then right at kickoff say something like, "@RichardSherman is a professional football player for the Seattle Seahawks."

Swallow your pride and make your boys rich. Hell, they can even throw down $50K of your own money for you.

I got $10 on the under on Omaha, knowing Manning he might not say it once the whole game fearing that the Seahawks may have caught something on film from previous games. $50 on Lynch having more rushing yards than Moreno, Seattle is gonna run run run in the hopes that they can milk the clock and keep Manning on the sidelines. That is how the Chargers beat them earlier in the season. Give me $5 on Moreno crying during the National Anthem, dude is an emotional guy, I would almost guarantee we see a tear from him. $10 on the over on the amount of times we hear beast mode, he's definitely gonna have a couple runs that force the announcers to say it. And lastly, give me $25 on no taunting penalty from Sherman DURING the game.. he will save all of that until after the game if they win.

Josh Miller

Crabtree really isn't much of a talker. He never has been. He's probably back home in Dallas not worrying about it.

Jason Cooper
Jason Cooper

@Josh Miller I don't know, according to what I hear there has been a lot of stuff going on between those two so while Crab might not talk a lot publicly, he gets his point across. He's definitely not afraid to tweet a shot at someone. If Sherman somehow gets embarrassed on Sunday, I can see Crab tweeting something, it maybe subliminal, but I don't see him passing up the opportunity. @Taj Griffin made a great point about Kap jumping in, I could definitely see that happening as soon as someone catches a ball on Sherman. He's been all over Sherman lately.

Josh Mahoney

@Eric Yates something tells me Vegas would catch wind and just shift the line in order to account for something like that.

Steve Ausburne

Anyone know the over/under for how many times my mother in law walks in the room to ask who's winning and then say something like go team?

Spoiler alert - no matter what the number, bet the over.

John Camacho

How can you not love the marijuana comments? You know that as someone says "bud" "smoke" "grass" or anything related to marijuana, Boom! You'll have Joe and Troy Aikman saying something.

Keith Anderson

@Steve Ausburne I think it's the same over/under as how many times my mother and sister in law will ask are the commercials on yet?

Jason Cooper

Lol @ the mother in law comments

All right, all right, all right…here we go.
$20 on Denver will make spread because while defense wins games, Peyton is a Manning and I just have a feeling he’ll step it up.
$20 says neither team will score in first 6 minutes of game. It’s gonna be a game of defense and the wind will be a factor.
$20 says no to Sherman taunting. Carroll already had a chat w/ him about it, and hopefully, he’ll have nothing to taunt about!
$20 says Peyton says Omaha UNDER 28 times. Gets a little gimmicky.
$20 says Crabtree will NOT tweet about Sherman during game.

kel

@Steve Ausburne And Steve, check your contract. Doesn’t say there will be math, doesn’t prohibit it either. lol

@Eric Yates get me in on that insider info and I'll go $99 on the Crabtree bet! Lacking mob like ties I'd put down $5 on the Broncos no matter how tempting those points are in a toss-up game. Give me $10 each on Knowshon crying during the anthem and the Euro soccer match besting Wilson's TD total. As everyone else has pointed out a Chili Pepper shirtless is a sure thing, but this is Monopoly money so putting $75 on Omaha being shouted more than 28 times.

I am not a betting man but if I was....
Bet the over on the national anthem. Recording artists on the big stage will go for the dramatic and hold a few notes longer than necessary.
Bet the over on Omaha. Manning will call out Omaha ad nauseum. Omaha has been in his cadence since he was in Indianapolis.
Bet no on Richard Sherman taunting. He is too smart and cunning. Will they call holding or interference against him is much more likely.
Bet the over on Beast mode. For better or worse the subject will be brought up.

Patrick Zimmerman

I'll put $25 on the Seahawks, since I think they'll win a close game outright.
Since I think Seattle will be leading most of the game and trying a clock-control offense, I'll take

Lynch with more yards for $25. Particularly since Wilson's last game was a little underwhelming, I think Carroll puts the ball in Lynch's hands a bit more to take the pressure off his QB.

I'll take a that the announcers won't say "Marijuana" during the game, since they're on national TV and under the microscope for $50. They'll say "drugs" or "drug-related" if they want to talk about Browner and refer to it obliquely. This bet only covers the two guys in the booth and the sideline reporter. Anyone else miked up doesn't count.

Just found this out for you halftime betters: First Bruno Mars song . . .

Locked out of Heaven: -125

Treasure: 3/1
Grenade: 11/2

Just the Way You Are: 9/1

Gorilla: 10/1

Marry You: 12/1

The Lazy Song: 12/1

After reading that, I'm very curious to see how the Chili Peppers fit into all this.

I'm putting down $25 on the seahawks taking a +2.5 over the broncos. I understand that the broncos are a great offensive team and their receivers are simply...amazing this season with Peyton. But, the seahawks are something else. Wilson is a game-changer and plays well in big games. The seahawks defense is also big-game performers. From what I saw against the 49ers, the seahawks are confident, fearless, and dominating.

I say Sherman get's a taunting penalty with $25. Some broncos players might get in on his case about an interception or celebration and maybe on the next couple of plays he'll get back in their faces - just for fun.

Beast mode will probably be said a couple of times by the announcers, just because they want to sound cool and reference Lynch. Maybe they'll also mention why Lynch hasn't been in "beast mode" with the media these days. I'll say over 2 for $25.

Finally, while it'd be interesting to bet on Moreno crying lol, i'll say he takes it home with the most rushing yards in the game (over Lynch). Moreno's coming to the super bowl to play hard. The broncos will be a force. $25

@ Everyone who's taking the Seahawks here's an interesting stat I saw today:

This season, Denver has only played 3 teams that were in the top half of the defensive rankings. To me, that gives Seattle the edge because Denver hasn't played a defense like theirs.

Jason Cooper
Jason Cooper
Senior Analyst

@Keith Anderson I was looking at the Broncos and Seahawks schedules this season trying to find some edges for both teams and I noticed that as well. I also noticed that the only real high powered offense the Seahawks have played this the Saints, although they beat them twice, the Saints have no where near the WR core that Denver has, and Denver actually has a running game.. So that favors the Broncos. It's gonna be a great matchup. Taking all the betting lines out of the equation, who do you think is going to win this game?

Scott Whittum
Scott Whittum

I would bet 50/50 type things like the coin toss or over/unders involving the amount of times marijuana is said or beast mode. Those types of bets are a little easier to win as the odds are not stacked up against you.

Tyler Olson

I'll put my whole $100 on the announcers not saying marijuana during the game.

Tyler Olson

Well I forgot to pick the winner. I have Seattle winning 32-30 so I'll put $25 on them and $75 on announcers not mentioning marijuana during the game.

Standard Bets -

B. Yes on Both teams making a 37 Yd. field goal or longer.
D. No team will score in the first six minutes.

Fun -

I. Regardless of who does the Anthem, I usually take the over. They tend to extend it as much as possible.
L. Sherman won't get a taunting penalty, maybe some sort of PI or illegal touching penalthy though.
M. Got to take the over on the Omaha's.
N. Hell yeah, cause you know, "They all about dat action, boss."

Steve Ausburne

Anybody want to bet me that Joe Buck will be very informative, charming, and a model of humility today?

kel

@Steve Ausburne You're saying he WILL be and I'm taking the NO side, right? Otherwise, that's known as a sucker bet. ;->

kel

@Steve Ausburne I'd take the Mother-in-law bet over that.

Dean Lake
Dean Lake
Editor

A. I'm putting only $10 on Denver -2.5. I really feel this is going to be a very low scoring game with Manning getting the ball last and getting the Broncos into field goal position to end the game 16-13.

B. $30 on both teams making a 37 yd or longer fg. Yeah, the weather won't be great, but I can see both teams trying to get points anyway they can, so long fg tries should be plentiful.

N. $30 on Red Hot Chili Peppers having their shirts off - at least Flea will. I'd also like to side wager $100 on Flea vomiting during their performance.

Q. $30 on yes "Marijuana" being mentioned. At +500 that's a big payoff, and it is more likely to happen than a Sherman taunting penalty at +400.

Dean Lake

@Brendan Cross The max is four props and you didn't say how much you would wager on each prop.

Dean Lake

@Ronald Fisher How much Monopoly money on each of your props?

Dean Lake

@kel You went over the max number of props (four), but I'll allow it.

Dean Lake

@Josh Mahoney The 145.5 is the number of seconds from first note sung to last note sung.

Steve Ausburne

Come on @kel Joe might just surprise you...

Brendan Cross
Brendan Cross
Senior Columnist

@Dean Lake Whoops must have glossed over that part. Well, I'll put $15 on the Broncos to win outright by at least 3. $35 on each kicker making at least a 37 yarder. I can imagine Prater making multiples in the 40's or 50's as Seattle holds Denver to some first downs but holds once the field shortens. Hauschka has quite a good leg and Seattle has been stalling on drives of late. $25 on Sherman not getting a taunting penalty, I can't imagine with the negative press he received that he would continue to really talk. Any by some players accounts I believe they say that really doesn't yap that much on the field, especially if they are losing. The last $25 I would put on someone on the RHCP either having or taking their shirt off. I can't imagine the cold would stop them, and being the Super Bowl, why not, it's the national stage, they do it at nearly all of their concerts so why not this one.

Dean Lake

I counted 122 seconds on the National Anthem, so under 145.5 wins (sorry @Ronald Fisher!).

I'm not sure if Knowshon cried.

Keith Anderson

@Jason Cooper I thought it was going to be a lot closer than it was, I had Seattle by a field goal.

Steve Ausburne

I bet $1,000 that Little Richard would do the half time show - for a minute I thought I had won.

Jason Cooper

@Keith Anderson you and me both. I thought Denver would win once I saw the weather was okay, wouldn't have been shocked if Seattle pulled it out, but never expected a blowout. That was a shocker.

Peter Thai

Knowshon Moreno looked to be a bit tearful on the sidelines in the 4th quarter. I suppose that serves as consolation for those who bet on him during the anthem lol.

Peter Thai

By the way, anybody know if the announcers mentioned Beast Mode?

Keith Anderson

@Peter Thai not even a single time

Jason Cooper

@Peter Thai I was wondering that myself. I couldn't remember hearing it. Thanks @Keith Anderson

Steve Ausburne
Steve Ausburne

@Keith Anderson, that surprises me. I hadn't heard it myself but I assumed it had to have been mentioned. I wonder if that was a intentional effort from the Fox producers to avoid nicknames to preserve the perception of neutrality.
